Utah’s Sweetest Neighborhood
Hi! My name is Ben Raskin and I’m running for City Council to represent the best district in Salt Lake City. Sugar House is the soul of the city and I’m ready to roll up my sleeves to serve the citizens of District 7.
Let me tell you about myself. I’ve lived in SLC for 22 years and lived in Sugar House for the last 14. I’m a senior communications writer at USANA Health Science and former bartender. I’m married to Erin and we have two dogs.
I’m running for improved public safety, protecting our open spaces, streamlining business licensing, and being an energetic and responsive public servant. I want faster police response times, compassionate and practical solutions to homelessness, explore means to help the Boys & Girls Club (address the abandoned tennis courts on 900 East and Sugarmont), help local businesses in the district, and be an approachable leader for the district.
The most significant issue facing SL City Council for the next four years will be the influx of capital from the American Rescue Plan. $1.5 billion will be given to the state, $225 million to the county and around $83 million to Salt Lake City. This is a generational bundle of funds for our community and I want to make sure our citizens in District 7 are heard when City Council works to invest this money into our community.
I’m committed to hosting quarterly town halls for the district, set up Sugar House Community Council subcommittees for public input, and allow robust conversation on how we can best use these funds. I want to make sure we have equitable distribution of the money and we invest in solutions to help all Salt Lakers.
I have a political science degree from University of Nevada and have been involved in the community for some time. This is my first time as a candidate but the last six months have been a galvanizing experience. I’m learning not just what the City Council can do, but what we can not.
I’m committed to working with the other council members and became a liaison between the citizens and District 7. I don’t pretend to have all the answers, but I will work tirelessly to listen and learn from all constituents. Public service is a public trust and I’ll do my very best to serve with honor, respect, and empathy with all citizens. Got a question? Call or text me at 801-918-7440.
Thank you for the support.
